Pineapple

The pineapple was discovered centuries ago in the verdant lowlands of Paraguay and was carried to other countries including Australia in trade ships.  It was a true celebrity fruit in its heyday.  Rare, expensive and with a striking appearance it was the ultimate exotic fruit and often used as the table centrepiece for feasts.

That sweetness with a touch of zing that you can only get from a sun-ripened pineapple is a long time in creation.  After planting, each pineapple takes a whole two years before being ready to harvest.   Unlike other fruits, the pineapple will not sweeten any further as it ripens.  That’s why it is important for us to work with our growers to ensure each crop will be bringing exactly the right balance of sweetness and zing for a Weis fruit and cream creation at harvest.  We also only use a summer variety of pineapple because they are naturally sweeter than winter hybrids.

Fortunately, travelling doesn’t extend the already lengthy growing process any further – the pineapples we use in our Passionfruit with Pineapple, Banana & Cream Bars do not of course need to come in trade ships from Paraguay.  We’ve been using a delicious variety which has been grown locally in the Sunshine Coast Hinterlands for as long as we have been making Weis Bars.
